Pittsburg State University is an accredited, comprehensive, state-suppported institution in southeastern Kansas, enrolling approximately 7,000 students annually. The multi-disciplinary Department of History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences at Pittsburg State houses the following majors: Geography, History, Justice Studies, Political Science, Social Work, and Sociology along with minors in Multicultural Studies and Philosophy. What unites the faculty from these diverse disciplines is a commitment to the search for truth and the love of learning. Department faculty confront the probabilistic nature of knowledge by requiring of themselves and students logical rigor, use of empirical evidence, and commitment to principled inquiry. The love of learning demands respect for reasoned differences, ethical treatment of others, civil discourse, and an appreciation that it is the process of rational learning that is at the core of the reasoned discourse. It is this respect for reasoned learning along with the unique subject matter of each discipline that is the primary responsibilities of the Department of History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences.
