Smith College School for Social Work faculty have expertise in relationally-based, culturally responsive practice that is firmly grounded in a synthesis of psychological and social theories and a commitment to antiracism and anti-oppressive practice. The curriculum is designed to educate students for the provision of effective clinical social work services with diverse communities in agency settings as well as with vulnerable and underserved populations. The program is known for its intensive field internships based across the United States and offers both an M.S.W. and PhD. The Smith SSW places a strong emphasis on both scholarship and teaching in considerations for tenure and promotion. The School’s explicit commitment to becoming an anti-racism institution infuses all aspects of its programs; faculty members are expected to actively contribute to this commitment in all aspects of their work. Smith College is part of a five college consortium centrally located in the Northeast corridor between Boston and New York in an academically engaged and demographically diverse area.
